Medication Management

Medication management provides convenient telepsychiatry evaluations and ongoing support to help ensure psychiatric medications are safe, effective, and aligned with each patient’s overall treatment goals.

Medication Management

Medication can be an important part of a personalized mental-health treatment plan. At Courageous Dialogue Counseling Center, medication-management services are provided through telepsychiatry, allowing you to meet with a qualified psychiatric provider from a private, convenient location. Care is collaborative and centered on your symptoms, medical history, concerns, preferences, and treatment goals.

What Is Medication Management?

Medication management involves more than writing a prescription. It is an ongoing process of evaluating whether medication may be appropriate, selecting a treatment carefully, monitoring how you respond, and making adjustments when needed.

Psychiatric medication may be considered for concerns such as depression, anxiety, mood disorders, attention difficulties, and other mental-health conditions. A medication is prescribed only when the provider determines that it is clinically appropriate. Because people can respond differently to the same medication, finding the most effective option with manageable side effects may require time, careful monitoring, and adjustments.

Medication may be used on its own or alongside psychotherapy and other forms of care as part of a broader treatment plan.

Your Initial Evaluation

Your first appointment gives the provider an opportunity to understand your needs and determine whether medication management is an appropriate service for you. The evaluation may include a review of:

  • Current symptoms and how they affect daily life

  • Mental-health and medical history

  • Previous diagnoses and treatments

  • Current and past psychiatric medications

  • Benefits or side effects experienced with previous medications

  • Prescription medications, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements

  • Medication allergies or other adverse reactions

  • Sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, and daily functioning

  • Relevant family, lifestyle, or substance-use information

  • Your questions, concerns, and treatment goals

An evaluation does not guarantee that medication will be prescribed. Your provider will discuss appropriate options, expected benefits, possible risks and side effects, alternatives, and any recommended follow-up care. When clinically necessary, additional records, laboratory work, vital signs, or coordination with another healthcare provider may be requested.

Ongoing Follow-Up and Monitoring

Medication management requires regular follow-up appointments. During these visits, you and your provider may discuss:

  • Changes in symptoms or daily functioning

  • Whether the medication is providing the intended benefit

  • Side effects or new concerns

  • Sleep, appetite, energy, mood, and concentration

  • Medication adherence and dosing questions

  • Changes to other medications or supplements

  • Whether the dosage or treatment plan should be adjusted

  • Refills and future monitoring needs

The frequency of follow-up visits will depend on the medication, your response to treatment, and your individual needs. Appointments may occur more frequently when starting or changing a medication and become less frequent once treatment is stable.

Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of a prescribed medication without speaking with your healthcare provider. Some medications must be reduced gradually to help prevent withdrawal symptoms or other harmful effects. Contact your provider promptly if you experience concerning side effects or believe a medication may be causing harm.

Medication and Therapy

Medication can help reduce certain symptoms, while therapy can address emotional concerns, coping strategies, behavior patterns, relationships, and the experiences contributing to distress. For some people, a combination of medication and psychotherapy provides the most effective support.

With your written permission, your psychiatric provider may coordinate care with your therapist, primary-care provider, or other members of your healthcare team. This collaborative approach can help ensure that each part of your treatment plan supports your overall health and well-being.

Telepsychiatry Appointments

Medication-management appointments are currently offered through telepsychiatry. Before your first appointment, the office will explain how to access the secure platform and complete any required consent forms.

For a successful virtual visit, please:

  • Choose a quiet, private place where you can speak openly

  • Use a reliable internet connection and a camera-enabled device

  • Join the appointment early enough to address technical problems

  • Have your current medication and supplement list available

  • Know the name and location of your preferred pharmacy

  • Be prepared to confirm your identity and physical location

  • Avoid driving or completing other activities during the appointment

Telepsychiatry eligibility depends on your physical location at the time of the appointment and the states in which the provider is authorized to practice. Please contact the office to confirm availability for your age group, location, and specific needs.

Privacy and Informed Consent

Before beginning telepsychiatry, you will receive information about the benefits and limitations of virtual care, privacy practices, and how to obtain help if technology fails or an urgent situation develops. You will also be asked to provide informed consent.

Use a private location and headphones when possible. Do not send sensitive medical or mental-health information through the website’s general contact or appointment-request form.

Refills and Urgent Concerns

Please follow the office’s established procedures for requesting prescription refills and allow enough time for the request to be reviewed. Do not wait until your medication has run out, and do not use the general website form for urgent medication needs.

Medication-management appointments are not an emergency service. If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental-health or suicide crisis, call or text 988 for immediate support.
